Is it Hayfever or is it a Cold?
By Douglas Linford, D.O.

Have you ever wondered if your symptoms are from a cold or from hayfever?

Here are a few tips (from the Mayo Clinic) that may help.

  Hayfever Cold
Signs and symptoms Runny nose with thin
watery discharge; no
fever
Runny nose with thick yellow discharge; low-grade fever
Onset Immediately after exposure to allergens One to three days after
exposure to cold virus
Duration As long as you’re exposed to allergens Five to seven days

There are many treatments for hayfever. The first thing to try is usually an anti-histamine, either over-the-counter or prescription. Some persons whose hayfever season is very short may benefit from an injection of a corticosteroid. There are also nasal sprays and eye drops available to help decrease the symptoms.

Colds are caused by viruses. Colds are best treated by treating the symptoms. The pharmacy has over-the-counter medications for runny noses, sneezing and cough.

Avoid these medications in children under 5 years old. Children under 18 years shouldn’t use aspirin unless under a doctor’s care. Ibuprofen or Tylenol can be used in children or adults for the aches and pain and to reduce fever.
